My Honest Review: Crunchi Makeup & Skincare

Are you on the hunt for makeup and skincare products without toxins? Don’t miss this review of Crunchi Makeup and Skincare. Although the clean beauty industry is leaps and bounds ahead of where it used to be when I first started my non-toxic journey, it’s still not always easy to find safe products. I have been researching non-toxic products, with a special interest in non-toxic beauty since 2015, and I’m happy to share what I’ve learned!

Crunchi is one of the safest non-toxic skincare and makeup brands out there. They have a wide range of amazing products for any look you want, and they never use unsafe ingredients in any of their products. Why I Love Crunchi’s Non-Toxic Skincare and Makeup

When I first began my fertility journey, I was astounded when I realized all of the toxins I was using on my face (and in my hair. And my kitchen. And even my armpits). Unbeknownst to many innocent shoppers, skincare and makeup products are often chock-full of toxic ingredients that put your health and fertility at risk. 

Many consumers fall into the trap of knowing that their ingredients could harm their health, but they don’t want to ditch the products they know and love. I knew that I could no longer use these fertility-threatening products- and so my search began. I was on a mission to revamp my beauty collection with non-toxic products that worked. After spending a LOT of time and money, I finally rebuilt both my skincare and makeup collections with products that I knew wouldn’t compromise my health. And, then, finally I found products that also worked (lol).

Enter, Crunchi. Crunchi is one of the tried-and-true brands that has been a go-to for me ever since going non-toxic. They’re one of the few skincare and makeup companies I have found that has completely met my standards regarding safe ingredients. Crunchi products are completely non-toxic and safe. Crunchi’s non-toxic makeup gives me the confidence boost I’m looking for when I want to put something extra into my look and their skincare keeps my skin looking good for those non makeup days. Truly Non-Toxic Skincare and Makeup

Crunchi’s non-toxic skincare and makeup are truly non-toxic, made with high-quality ingredients that won’t compromise your health. Their products are safe for pregnancy, trying to conceive, or just trying to protect your general health. Unlike many other personal care products that use parabens, phthalates, triclosan, sulfates, and PFAs (and the list goes on), Crunchi ensures that all of its ingredients are safe before use.

They have a list of banished ingredients that they never include in their products. They use mostly natural ingredients with a strategic selection of safe synthetics to produce top-notch quality. Their products are even cleaner than my beloved Beautycounter’s because they don’t use synthetic colors or the preservative Phenoxyethanol. They also rigorously test for heavy metals (just like Beautycounter). Crunchi produces THE safest high-performance makeup on the market, in my opinion. Their skincare is as safe as Pure Haven, making those two companies the safest skincare companies, in my opinion. (This doesn’t mean that other companies aren’t safe, just that we’re at the top tier here).

Crunchi doesn’t greenwash or sugarcoat anything- their products are all safe for everyday use and made with effective ingredients that won’t put your health at risk. Plus, they are also all made in the USA.

Ethically Sourced Mica

While unethical Mica sourcing practices are common in the cosmetic industry, Crunchi holds itself to the highest standard when sourcing its ingredients. Crunchi’s non-toxic makeup ingredients are sourced from reputable and ethical U.S. companies. Crunchi’s Mica only comes from regions that do not engage in child labor. 

Vegan and Cruelty-Free 

Crunchi’s non-toxic skincare and makeup products are all made to be vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, Leaping Bunny Certified, and non-GMO. Many non-toxic personal care brands still use animal products in their skincare and makeup (which is fine if you’re not set on using vegan products!). For consumers seeking high-quality makeup that’s also safe, vegan, and cruelty-free, Crunchi is the way to go. 

Environmentally Friendly Products

Crunchi’s environmental practices set them apart from many other makeup brands. They are committed to using recycled and low/zero waste packaging. They are almost zero-plastic, with only a few tops of products being plastic tops. Other than that they use paper and glass, and their packaging is amazing. I really appreciate this in a beauty brand- I’m a big believer in being eco-friendly whenever possible. 

Ingredient Testing 

Not only does Crunchi use exclusively safe, vegan, environmentally friendly, and cruelty-free products, but they test all of their products for common contaminants like heavy metals and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This is an area where most clean brands miss- Crunchi lists out ALL of their ingredients and tests them vigorously for any kind of unsafe contaminants. The only other brand I know doing this kind of rigorous testing is Beautycounter!

Affordable Cosmetics

Many safe cosmetics tend to be on the pricier side. Crunchi‘s non-toxic makeup and skincare is a more affordable option that delivers high-quality results despite its lower price point. This makes it a great choice for anyone trying to build up a non-toxic makeup routine since you can get more products for the same price! 

Affordable Skincare

Crunchi offers complete ingredient transparency, a list of banished ingredients you will not find in their products, no synthetic colors, made in the USA, and sustainable packaging. I have super sensitive skin and Crunchi offers the only serums that I don’t react negatively to! I love their Goldenlight Multi-Peptide Facial Serum and use it every day. I also love their facial oil and find that their products overall are much more affordable than other clean brands.

Ingredient Transparency

Crunchi’s non-toxic products including skincare and makeup follows INCI naming conventions regarding its ingredients—in other words, there is no mystery behind its production practices. It calls its ingredients by their actual names, which are standardized by the industry. This ensures that the ingredients are listed with integrity, and as consumers, we’re getting the whole truth from Crunchi. If you find a brand whose ingredients sound different, or you can’t find the ingredients on the Environmental Working Group’s website, you know the company isn’t following INCI standards.

Crunchi Is Working to Improve the Cosmetic Industry

Not only does Crunchi not use toxins in their products, but they’re working to reduce the amount of toxins on the market in general. The abundance of toxins in the cosmetic industry boils down to a lack of regulation: only 11% of ingredients have been reviewed for safety by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (what about the other 89%?). 

Crunchi endorses the Safer Beauty Bills Package, which consists of four bills to increase product safety in the cosmetic industry. These include the Toxic-Free Beauty Act, the Cosmetic Safety for Communities of Color and Professional Salon Workers Act, the Cosmetic Fragrance and Flavor Ingredient Right to Know Act, and the Cosmetic Supply Chain Transparency Act.

• Goldenlight Multi-Peptide Facial Serum – My FAVORITE product! My skin is super sensitive and this is the ONLY serum I can use from any brand I have tried! I feel old using it, but I love it so much that it’s worth it!
• I AM Bright Vitamin C Facial Serum – Not only does this Vitamin C serum brighten and even skin tone, but it can also decrease the appearance of scars and protect from blue light damage!
• I AM Luminous Facial Oil – I LOVE facial oils and this one is the best! It reduces redness, minimizes the appearance of pores, helps regulate oil production, and improves skin texture!
• I AM Polished Facial Exfoliator – this multitasker can be used as a gentle exfoliant or a 5 minute mask treatment to help reduce the appearance of pores, fine lines, and winkles.
• I AM The Balm Makeup Cleansing Balm – this multitasking product can be used as a makeup remover, gentle cleanser, and a 5 minute hydrating face mask!
• Nightlight Advanced Facial Cream – This product features bakuchiol which studies have shown works better than retinol, is gentle enough for sensitive skin, and is much safer than retinol!
• Nightlight Facial Cream – This nighttime face moisturizer is formulated for all skin types and is packaged in a recyclable glass jar (you can even recycle the lid!)
• Powerlight Eye Cream – Winner of the 2022 Earth Day Beauty Awards, this eye cream helps brighten the skin around the eyes and reduces puffiness.
• Sunlight Facial SPF 30 – Winner of the 2022 Earth Day Beauty Awards! This mineral face sunscreen won’t leave a white caste like so many other mineral sunscreens.

Crunchi Makeup: My Favorite Products

Whether you’re going for a natural makeup look or full glam, Crunchi’s vast product selection has something for everyone. These are all of my FAVORITE products from Crunchi- I truly love them! 

• Beautifully Flawless Foundation— I love this product! It’s a buildable fuller-coverage liquid foundation that seamlessly blends into the skin. The formula helps to smooth out blemishes and imperfections, and nine shades are available to match a wide range of skin tones. I find that this is a full coverage foundation, and if you want lighter coverage you need to apply sparingly. Use ​this guide to choose your shade​ and/or text a picture in natural light without makeup to customer service and a Crunchi makeup artist can help you determine your shade. OR you can email the picture to me, and we can probably get you an answer more quickly!
• Cheekmate Blush – This cheek color has a slight shimmer and creates a gorgeous, glowing finish. 
• ​Cheekmate Liquid Blush​ – This stuff is amazing! If you’ve never tried a liquid blush its time! And so easy to travel with! Dab a few dots on each cheek and use fingertips or the ​No. 4 Blush Brush​ to gently blend.
• Everluxe Lip Crayon– This nourishing lip pencil delivers bold color in sustainable packaging. There are tons of lipstick shades to choose from!
• Eyeshadow – They have two different eyeshadow palettes that come in gorgeous shades to compliment any eye color. 
• Highliner Pencil Eyeliner– This eye pencil is gentle enough for sensitive eyes and the creamy formula glides on effortlessly. It’s perfect for a subtle look or to build up a more intense smoky eye! 
• Hydrogloss Lip Oil- This hydrating lip product delivers next-level gloss through nourishing ingredients like organic olive fruit oil, shea butter, and coconut oil. 
• Luminescence Highlighter– This highlighter is formulated using light-reflecting mica to create a radiant lit-from-within makeup look. 
• ​My Alibi Liquid Concealer​ – This brightening product uses a creamy, nourishing solution to hydrate the skin and conceal acne, discoloration, redness, and dark circles. Use a shade slightly lighter than your foundation for underneath your eyes to brighten your face! Use the same color to hide blemishes.
• Nutribrow Eyebrow Pencil – I love this eyebrow pencil! Its effortless application is perfect for framing the face. This is the only eyebrow pencil that I’ve used in years.
• Shattered Mascara – This lengthening and volumizing mascara is amazing. It gives me such full, bold eyelashes. I’ve found that it can smudge a bit under my lower lashes, so I add a bit of translucent powder to the under-eye and it does the trick! 
• Smart Primer– This foundation primer noticeably reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and pores to create a flawless base for your makeup. It helps makeup go on smoother and last for longer. 
• Solarise Bronzer– This powder can be used for bronzing or contouring to add warmth and definition to the face. 
• Translucent Finishing Powder– This loose powder helps to smooth out fine lines and pores, minimize the appearance of oily or shiny skin, and give your makeup the lasting power to stay put all day long. 

What Makes Crunchi Non-Toxic? 

Unfortunately, greenwashing is common in the personal care industry nowadays. There are countless beauty brands out there marketing themselves as “non-toxic” when in reality their skincare and makeup products are filled with sneaky, lesser-known health-threatening chemicals. So let’s dive into what sets Crunchi apart from the other brands.

No Phenoxyethanol 

Although phenoxyethanol is a preservative that I personally feel comfortable using, many consumers don’t want to use this ingredient as it can be an allergen. Crunchi’s non-toxic makeup and skincare is made without the use of phenoxyethanol, making it a great option for consumers with allergies or hesitancies. Along with phenoxyethanol, Crunchi opts to avoid controversial preservatives such as Japanese honeysuckle (which may mimic the role of paraben in the body) and grapefruit seed extract (which can be contaminated by triclosan, methylparaben, and benzethonium chloride).  To be clear, I don’t mind using products with those ingredients, but I love that Crunchi is going even FURTHER than my strict standards!

No Synthetic Colors

For anyone hoping to avoid synthetic colors in their cosmetic products, Crunchi is an excellent choice. They only use natural mineral pigments that are ethically and responsibly sourced (not from China), and the ingredients used in their colored cosmetics are ECOCERT verified. This European Union certification ensures that their pigments are free of synthetic or potentially toxic additives. (Europe is much stricter on which ingredients they allow than the U.S., so knowing that they abide by these standards is reassuring.) This does mean that you will have more limited color options, and that colors may not be as robust or last as long as brands that use synthetic color. BUT, especially in lip color, this means you won’t be ingesting synthetic colors, which do come with some health concerns.

No Gluten

Crunchi’s non-toxic makeup and skincare is all made with gluten-free ingredients. Their products are tested for gluten for individuals with gluten sensitivities or Celiac Disease. The majority of Crunchi’s products are created in a gluten-free facility and the ones that don’t adhere to a strict protocol to avoid cross-contamination. 

Extremely Low Levels of Heavy Metals 

While many beauty companies rely on manufacturer testing when it comes to heavy metals, Crunchi conducts their own testing. They aim for non-toxic products with as little heavy metal levels as possible. (This is especially important when it comes to anything that goes on your lips since you’re likely ingesting small amounts of your lip gloss or balm!)

In addition to the testing that they conduct, they source high-quality pigments from trusted U.S. suppliers. Many brands source their pigments from China, which can be problematic when it comes to heavy metals due to their loose restrictions and high levels of pollution. Additionally, Crunchi sources their Mica responsibly without the practice of child labor. 

Is Dimethicone Safe?

Dimethicone can sometimes stir controversy among concerned consumers. However, there are no reliable sources indicating that it’s actually unsafe. Interestingly, dimethicone can be found in some EWG-verified products (even though it can negatively impact the score of non-EWG-verified products).

This ingredient is used to improve the performance of the Beautifully Flawless Foundation, helping the formula to become more spreadable and smooth the skin complexion. Personally, I am okay with using dimethicone, as I have not been able to find any reputable sources that convince me otherwise.

Crunchi vs. Beautycounter 

Crunchi and Beautycounter have both earned a spot on my list of top favorite brands. Although Beautycounter is my favorite brand it is not currently available for purchase, making, Crunchi my current favorite brand. Additionally Crunchi is cleaner than Beautycounter. I think that Beautycounter does have a leg up in terms of performance, which is why they earned my top spot, but alas, they cannot currently be purchased. The big wins for Crunchi are the affordability of their products, and the lack of synthetic coloring. Crunchi and Beautycounter both have strict standards when it comes to their ingredient selection, production practices, and ethical practices. I appreciate their dedication to ingredient safety and how meticulous they are in their testing and standards. For this reason, I love them BOTH. Unfortunately, Beautycounter isn’t available to purchase right now, but hopefully, they will be back in Fall 2024.

Yes! Crunchi products are completely non-toxic and safe for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and trying to conceive. 

How Long Do Crunchi Products Last? 

Each Crunchi product has a “Period After Opening” (PAO) label on the product or on their website. The PAO indicates how long a product maintains its quality after opening. Crunchi uses safe preservatives to extend the shelf life of their products, however, be sure to check the PAO for recommended use to avoid applying expired products! 

Where Can You Buy Crunchi Products? 

As of right now, Crunchi products can only be found on their website. 

Are All Crunchi Products Pregnancy-Safe?

Although Crunchi’s products are made without the ingredients that are a threat to pregnancy, and although I consider all their products pregnancy-safe, they DO NOT specifically formulate all of their products to be safe in pregnancy or adhere to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists suggested limits on ingredients, in the way that Beautycounter does.
